Tiled shower pan is a sandwich of seven (that's 7!) layers, each one of them essential. Plywood, vapor barrier, lath reinforcement, sub-slope, membrane, mortar bed, tile – from the bottom up. Every year we are assigned to a grim task of taking apart and rebuilding a handful of showers that were built only a few short years prior. Direct impact of hot water several times a day creates an unforgiving environment and corners, cut during construction, will make themselves known in a way of mold and mildew, persistent leaks, grout failures, cracking tile, rot, decay and more mold.
